The first dog biscuits were introduced in the 1860s, after a lightning rod salesman named James Pratt travelled to England, and noticed British sailors throwing leftover “hard tack” to stray dogs. These were dry biscuits made from flour, water and salt, and a staple diet for sailors for hundreds of years. James had the idea of making cheap, easy-to-serve biscuits to sell to the growing number of dog owners, and his Dog Cakes were produced in a factory in East London. They were a big hit, and were launched in the USA in the 1870s. One of his first employees was a Charles Cruft, who went on to found the Cruft's Dog Shows.
